Client: Large Private Equity Platform Company

Challenge

Our client, the crown jewel platform company of a rapidly growing lower middle market private equity firm, was embarking on an ambitious growth strategy to double its size within the next 12 to 18 months through a series of acquisitions. The company required a Head of Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) to lead this effort—a critical position given the company’s inorganic growth objectives. This role was not only crucial but also unique, as the candidate would be entrusted with significant responsibility and autonomy to drive the M&A strategy.

Our Approach

Given the importance of this role, we collaborated closely with the managing partners at the private equity firm to define the ideal candidate profile. They sought someone with a rare combination of experience: a background in investment banking, several years of private equity experience, and hands-on M&A experience within an industry, ideally at a portfolio company. Additionally, the role required someone comfortable with significant travel between the portfolio company and the private equity firm.

To attract such a specialized candidate, we developed a highly targeted sourcing strategy and created compelling outreach content. This content was designed to resonate with candidates who might not be actively seeking a move but would be drawn to the unique opportunity and challenge this role presented.

Outcome

Due to the specialized nature of the role, we expanded our typical candidate search, evaluating over 15 high-caliber candidates. After presenting this diverse slate of candidates to the managing partners, a few stood out, and one candidate was ultimately selected for the role.

Recognizing the importance of securing this candidate, we worked closely with the private equity firm to craft an attractive offer. This package included a competitive base salary, a significant cash bonus, and equity incentives designed to motivate the candidate to drive the company’s ambitious growth plans
