Oil & Gas and Energy Executive Search

Energy executive search, from the reservoir to the boardroom.

Energy is our oldest division. Hazeltine started in 2015 with upstream oil and gas, and it remains our most experienced practice. We work nationwide, across every U.S. basin.

Hazeltine Executive Search is an oil and gas executive search firm. There is not a role inside an upstream oil and gas company we haven't placed. Finance and accounting is the majority of our energy work, but we also place reservoir engineers, production engineers, geologists, landmen, land executives, geoscience and engineering executives, corporate development leaders, and more. This year alone our E&P placements include a Chief Accounting Officer, CFO, VP of Finance, VP of Investor Relations, VP of HSER, and VP of Midstream.

Whether you need a reservoir engineer recruiter, a landman recruiter, or a CFO search, it runs through the same process and the same team.

We invest in this industry too.

Our leadership personally invests in minerals and working interests. So we know the market and the industry the way an investor does, not just the way a recruiter does. We can talk shop with a geologist, a landman, or a CFO. Candidates notice. It is a big reason we get callbacks and win searches.

The Position Package gets them to listen. Industry knowledge keeps the conversation going.

Where we work

Upstream

E&P companies, from sponsor-backed start-ups to established operators.

Midstream

Gathering, processing, pipelines, storage.

Oilfield services

Equipment, services, and rental companies, many PE-owned.

Power

Generation, renewables, and energy transition companies.

What we screen for in energy

  • Commodity cycles. Has the candidate worked through a downturn, not just a boom?
  • Sponsor reporting. Monthly packages, lender compliance, borrowing base.
  • Deals. Acquisitions, divestitures, and sale processes from the company side.
  • Technical accounting. Full cost vs. successful efforts, hedging, AROs, JV accounting.
  • Fit with a lean team. Most sponsor-backed energy companies run small teams.

Situations we see often

  • A sponsor funds a new team and needs a first CFO before the first acquisition closes.
  • A midstream company outgrows its Controller as volumes and entities pile up.
  • An oilfield services company is 12 to 18 months from a sale and the numbers aren't ready.
  • The CFO leaves mid-cycle and the lender still wants the compliance certificate on time.

What clients say

"Historically, I've been a skeptic when it comes to working with recruiting firms, but Hazeltine completely changed my perception. I felt like they were my partner throughout the entire recruiting process, adding value every step of the way."SVP, PE-backed midstream company
"The team at Hazeltine has been a great resource. They take the time to understand what their client needs, find a list of qualified candidates, and help their client understand what the recruit is looking for in a new role."CFO, PE-backed energy company

How we reach candidates

We pick up the phone.

A lot of recruiting is LinkedIn InMails and emails sent out in bulk, hoping something sticks. We build a targeted list for every search, and our first outreach is a phone call. The best finance leaders aren't scrolling job boards or talking to five recruiters. They get plenty of messages and very few calls. Across hundreds of searches, the phone call has found our best candidates, the ones who weren't looking. Then the Position Package lets them see the hiring manager and the role on video before the first interview.
